Microsoft will finally allow Windows users to install PC games from the Microsoft Store or Xbox Game Pass for PC in any folder of their choice with unlimited access. This move will allow PC gamers to freely access and edit game folders, or Windows users to freely move games to any folder or drive they choose.

Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans say The edge that the changes are part of an update to the Xbox app for Windows that is currently being tested internally. Updating the Xbox app will finally fix a big problem with installing games from Xbox Game Pass for PC, where gamers would experience issues with Microsoft Store, restricted WindowsApps folder, or just inability. to completely control where the games have been installed.

Microsoft won’t be blocking you from accessing game folders anytime soon.

While Microsoft previously supported mods for some titles in the Microsoft Store, opening folder access to games will now allow more games to support mods without players needing to activate it. in games.

The Microsoft Store has traditionally restricted access to where games are installed using Windows folder permissions that make it difficult to save games or move them around freely. It’s a headache if you need to reinstall Windows and install games on a secondary drive, or if you uninstall a game installed from the Microsoft Store and it is still using disk space.

Other PC game launchers like Steam or Battle.net allow players to save games, restore them, and review them. Microsoft’s new Xbox app update includes an option to check and repair files, which will presumably be used to support game backup. There are also new options to navigate to where files are installed, change the drive where games are installed, and select custom folders for installations.

We asked Microsoft about their internal testing of this updated Xbox app, and surprisingly, the company confirmed their more open approach to installing PC games from the Microsoft Store.

“With great PC games like Back 4 Blood, Age of Empires IV, Forza Horizon 5, and Infinite halo From day one with Game Pass, we wanted to give gamers more options to customize their experience in the Xbox app, ”said Jason Beaumont, Partner Director of Experiences at Xbox. “We will continue to share updates as we release additional features. “

A few hours after this article was published, Microsoft also released a video detailing the changes. Xbox Insiders will be able to test a new version of the Xbox PC app soon, and we expect the updated app to appear in beta ahead of a free version of Infinite halo multiplayer on December 8.

Update, November 11, 10:40 a.m.ET: Microsoft released a video detailing these changes a few hours after this article was published. We’ve updated the article to include the video from Microsoft.

Microsoft hosted an event last night where the company launched a new Surface laptop, as well as a new version of Windows, specifically for schools. The Microsoft Surface Laptop SE is Microsoft’s most affordable computer, while Windows 11 SE is the company’s simplified version of Windows 11, designed primarily for educational purposes. The Windows 11 SE is a competitor to Google’s Chrome operating system that powers Chromebook laptops. On the other hand, the Surface Laptop SE presents itself as a competitor of the Chromeboooks. Let’s take a look at some of Microsoft’s major announcements at its “What’s Next for Education” event.

Microsoft Surface Laptop SE: pricing, specs, and more

Starting with the Microsoft Surface Laptop SE, it’s priced at $ 249 (around Rs 18,500), making it the most affordable Surface laptop to date. The Surface Laptop SE comes with the same keyboard and trackpad we saw on Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Go. The laptop features an 11.6-inch display with a 1366 x 768 resolution and 16: 9 aspect ratio, making the Surface Laptop SE the first Surface device in over seven years to feature an aspect ratio. / width 16: 9.

Surface Laptop SE is powered by an Intel Celeron N4020 or N4120 processor paired with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 128GB of eMMC storage. The company also provided a 720p camera. In terms of connectivity, the Surface Laptop SE comes with a single USB A port, a USB Type-C port, a DC connector, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Surface Laptop SE will be launched in early 2022 in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Japan initially.

Microsoft Windows 11 SE

Now Microsoft has also launched Windows 11 SE. While the Surface Laptop SE is an answer to Chromebooks, Windows 11 SE is Microsoft’s answer to Google’s Chrome operating system. Now Windows 11 SE is a new edition of Windows 11 designed for students and schools. Windows 11 SE will only ship on low-cost laptops designed for K-8 classrooms. Microsoft said it has spoken with teachers and students for the past 18 months to get feedback on its efforts on low-cost Windows laptops.

Now Windows has tried this approach in the past. The company has tried an S mode for schools before, but it didn’t work due to patchy implementation. With Windows 11 SE, Microsoft is taking a different approach. The company said Windows 11 SE will only be available on inexpensive laptops for school and educational purposes. While Windows 11 SE is a toned down version of Windows 11, it’s not just limited to Microsoft apps.

Windows 11 SE will not ship with the Microsoft Store. Microsoft instead allows certain third-party applications for IT administrators to be provisioned on OS devices.

Windows 11 SE removes the new Widgets section that was released with Windows 11. Microsoft Edge in Windows 11 SE can also be configured to accept Chrome extensions, which are disabled by default on Windows 11. The operating system will also ship with a new Bloom wallpaper and with some changes in the way the apps are grouped. Several manufacturers like Acer, Asus, Dell, Dynabook, Fujitsu, HP, JK-IP, Lenovo, and Positivo will all be making Windows 11 SE laptops in the coming months.

While Windows 11 comes with a pretty stringent set of hardware requirements, any operating system can get bogged down over time.

Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take to improve the performance of a Windows 11 PC and keep your system vibrant and responsive.

Disable Windows 11 startup programs

One of Windows’ biggest performance blockers is software that makes its way into the startup routine, which means it loads automatically in the background every time you start the PC, whether you are actively using it. the program or not.

If you find that Windows 11 takes a while to load on startup, or if it takes a while before your system becomes usable, unwanted startup programs are probably to blame.

Fortunately, removing unwanted programs from the startup routine is easy. Click on Settings > applications > Start and you will see a list of software that loads automatically when you log in. Disable any non-essential software, paying special attention to applications marked as “high impact” – although these labels are not always reliable.

Alternatively, you can press CTRL + Gap + ESC to access the Task Manager window, which contains the same start menu, only with the old user interface.

Don’t be overzealous here. For example, if you’re using an online backup service like OneDrive or Dropbox, not allowing it to run on startup can cause your files to not sync correctly. Likewise, leave any security software alone, as you don’t want to weaken your PC’s protection.

Windows 11 has added new software at default startup, including Microsoft Teams – so feel free to turn it off if it’s something you don’t use.

Migrate Windows 11 from hard drive to SSD

An M.2 SSD shown inside a PC system

If your PC is still running on an old-fashioned hard drive, the biggest performance boost you could give it is to upgrade to an SSD. Solid-state drives have no moving parts, unlike these spinning hard drive platters, which means applications load in a flash and files are retrieved almost instantly.

We have a separate article that shows you how to upgrade Windows 11 PC from hard drive to SSD. It’s the kind of upgrade you can undertake on your own, but if you’re not confident, any PC repair shop will do the job for you.

The most immediate change you’ll see is that Windows will boot in a fraction of the time it took on your mechanical hard drive. In addition, you will also be able to start using your system immediately, rather than waiting for apps to load in the background. Beyond that, the overall responsiveness for most activities should increase dramatically on an SSD. We also have plenty of reviews of the latest SSDs to hit the market, in case you need help choosing one.

Install Windows 11 apps from safe places

A screenshot of the Microsoft App Store on Windows 11

A good number of Windows performance issues are caused by app installations that bring all kinds of unwanted elements with them: additional apps, browser toolbars, or even malware.

We’ve all been surprised by installers who have pre-checked boxes for additional software in a rush to install a new app. However, there are ways to avoid them.

Only install software from reputable and known sources. Microsoft’s own app store – now called the Microsoft Store and found on the Windows 11 taskbar – has been a void in recent years, but Microsoft has gone to great lengths to make the Store a one-stop-shop for all kinds of things. ‘Apps in Windows 11 If you’ve struggled to find the apps you need in the past, it might be worth taking another look. You can rest assured that no apps installed through the Microsoft Store will come with unwanted baggage.

Alternatively, those more comfortable with the command line might prefer the Windows Package Manager. Those familiar with Linux should be comfortable with the package manager. Once installed, it basically allows you to install apps using a single line of code, again avoiding any risk of anything unwanted being embedded in the desired app.

Installing an app becomes as easy as opening a command prompt and typing: winget install < nom de l'application > (without spaces before and after appname).

Only certain applications are available via this route. You can read more about Windows 11 Package Manager here.

Do not close Windows 11

Windows had a bad reputation for chewing on laptop batteries, even when the cover was closed and the computer was supposed to be sleeping. With the help of modern hardware, things have improved dramatically in this department, which means that you really don’t have to shut down your PC completely if you don’t need it for a while, even for a whole weekend.

A graph showing that the battery life of a laptop has barely depleted in sleep mode in Windows 11

The graph shown above shows the battery drain of a Windows 11 laptop that has been left in standby / hibernation for almost four days. As you can see, the battery barely ran out during this time, and when we picked it up on day four, it was ready to go the moment we connected. This is much faster than going through the full startup routine that a full shutdown would have required.

Having said that, if you find that the performance is getting a little rough with your PC, sometimes it only takes a shutdown and restart to restore its zip.

Adjust Windows 11 performance settings

A screenshot showing the settings that can be changed in Windows 11 to improve performance

Windows 11 offers a selection of well-hidden performance settings, but could make a noticeable difference to PC responsiveness if you are running the operating system on a PC that exceeds minimum hardware requirements.

To find these settings, open the Control Panel then use the Search Control Panel bar at the top right of this window to search ‘performance’. Click on Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.

Here you will have a plethora of options to choose from, but if you choose to tick Adjust for better performance it will turn everything off. This is overkill, as it disables features like “smooth edges of screen fonts” which can make screen fonts very jagged and difficult to read.

Experiment with different options, but the most likely to improve performance are things like animations, menu fades, and shadows below windows.

Switch Windows 11 to battery mode Better performance

A screenshot showing how to switch Windows 11 to battery mode Better performance

If you are using a laptop on battery power, Windows 11 will, by default, place the laptop in a “balanced” power mode that compromises performance to prevent the battery from being pounded.

However, if your battery is fully charged and you need all the processing power you can get your hands on to perform an intensive task, such as rendering video, you may want to put the laptop into mode. “Better performance”. To do this, go to Settings > Power and battery, and under Supply Mode to select ‘Best performance’.

This should give you the same level of performance as if the laptop was plugged in. Keep an eye on the battery though, as it can drain quite quickly when the system is pushed to the limit.

Along with this tweak, we also have some tips to improve the overall speed of the laptop, which might also help improve your experience using Windows 11.

As reported by Windows Central, Microsoft is working on what you might call the “Surface Laptop SE” and it is apparently designed to compete with Chromebooks in the education market. Codenamed Tenjin, it will have an Intel Celeron N4120 and will be low cost. It will likely come with Windows 11 SE preinstalled. Back when we first heard that Microsoft had canceled a version of its operating system that was supposed to rival Chrome OS in terms of universal simplicity, user experience, and ease of adoption, I felt and ended up being right that the company would focus on 11 and make it as universal and accessible as Chrome OS.

Windows 11 SE is developed to run on low-end hardware and is intended for the education market. According to Tom’s Hardware, it is actually created and intended for children. For this reason, it will feature a lite version of the operating system without any ads. The News & Interests widget will be removed, it will have full Win32 app support with S mode disabled, a blocked Microsoft Store by default, and a Settings app that removed all mentions of Edge and Bing. Oh, and the phone integration will be removed as well.

SE is not intended to replace Windows 11 Education Edition, but rather to accompany it in the market. While we don’t know much about the new, streamlined version of the operating system yet, we do – Microsoft is jumping into the search for Google Chromebooks. In education, the company lost its foothold years ago, and yes, as Chrome OS entered that space because nobody wanted it on the consumer side at the time, it did. took root and is now the dominant experience in the classroom.

For this reason, Microsoft has a long way to go. It’s been trying to get schools back for years with budget hardware, but Windows 10 was just too open and complex for kids, and its entry-level hardware was cheap and crappy compared to aluminum, glass. and the high-end 4-in-1. features that come with mid-range Chromebooks. Getting a Surface-branded machine in the hands of kids and making them affordable will help the company’s strategy, but I anticipate five to ten years before they see massive success on a large scale. Yes, Windows is still the colloquial name, but Chromebooks only dominate this space these days.

Do I think Windows can overtake Chrome OS in education? May be. It would be foolish to pretend that this is not a possibility. I mean, it’s a trusted name, and they’ve got decades of endurance in the minds and hearts of generations, but the new generation is using iPads and Chromebooks in school, and they’ll grow up in them. ‘by handing over to these new technologies and brands as they age. Google has done a lot to get where it is today, and they won’t be easily dethroned.

Even if that happens, and I believe it’s still a possibility, I don’t think Google would be too broken about it. Schools are a staple of its business, but over the past five or so years, Chromebooks have become a key part of success for millions of business owners, businesses, home-based families, and even people who want something new, exciting and Easy.

Add to that the fact that web apps are the new normal and PWAs are on the rise – not to mention that none of these experiences are essential the Windows way, and you yourself have a recipe for the two operating systems will co-exist for many years to come. Google has fought an uphill battle to get to where they are now, and it’s not because the IT MA (one of them) comes along and decides to do things differently based on From Google’s influence over the past decade, that doesn’t mean that millions of Chromebook users, both in and out of schools, will immediately redeem and buy a Windows device.

Microsoft Windows Defense is undergoing a major overhaul that allows home network administrators to deploy Android, iOS, and Mac clients to monitor anti-virus, phishing, password leak, and identity theft alerts from a secure dashboard.
In the past, antivirus solutions were very simple PC applications, each device had its protection, but none of the devices spoke to each other.
With this setup, if a device detects malware, only the person using the device knows, rather than providing a centralized reporting dashboard.
As home networks become more complex, connected and diverse, antivirus vendors are starting to offer lean versions of their business offerings that allow home admins to manage all devices from a single board. on board.

Microsoft’s Complete Home Security Suite

Over the past few years, Microsoft has focused on corporate security, while Windows 10 users have had to use passable but fairly generic Microsoft antivirus software built into the software.
Everything is about to change, based on a new Microsoft Defender Preview app that was added to the Microsoft Store last week, with Microsoft creating a full home security suite for Windows 11, Windows 10, iOS, Android, and macOS.
Microsoft Defender is a security app that puts your mind at ease. With our personalized dashboard, you can view the security posture of your Windows device and other connected devices (Mac, iOS and Android) in one only place, ”reads the Microsoft Defender Preview app description.
The new preview is internally codenamed “Gibraltar” because it is currently limited to Microsoft employees.
However, the strings found in the executable files by BleepingComputer indicate that the new security solution will include anti-virus, phishing protection, password leak detection, identity theft monitoring, advice from security, etc.
Home admins will add other family members to their dashboards via email or QR code invitations. These invitations can lead the device to install an iOS, Android, Windows, or macOS agent that automatically registers in the Home Security Dashboard.
Ahmed Walid, a Windows software developer, tinkered with the app to bypass authentication, giving us a preview of what the new Microsoft Defender security dashboard will look like.
The dashboard will allow you to view device health alerts for monitoring identities and future connections. Additionally, the Identity Theft Watch feature will support API calls found in the Microsoft Defender preview subscription for kids and adults.
Using their ‘personal dashboard’, home network administrators can monitor ‘health’ alerts for all registered devices, which may include password leaks, malware alerts, or issues. identity theft.
It’s unclear when Microsoft Defender Preview will be available for beta testing, but it will likely first appear on Windows 10 and Windows 11 Insiders in the coming months.
BleepingComputer has contacted Microsoft with further questions about this new feature and will update the post if we have any news.

Microsoft has started the gradual rollout of its new operating system, Windows 11, earlier this month. Although only certain PCs have been prompted to update, you might be wondering how the operating system is different from Windows 10, and if it’s worth downloading right now. You have until 2025 to make your decision, when Microsoft announces that it will no longer support Windows 10, but if you’re ready to upgrade to Windows 11 now, you can download operating system to your computer as long as it meets the eligibility criteria. If you already have Windows 10, Windows 11 will be available for free. (If you you don’t have Windows 10 yet, here’s how to get it.)

Before installing the new operating system, let’s go over the big changes Microsoft has made and take a look at what’s really different. Here is everything that has changed from Windows 10 to Windows 11. And be sure to check it out our favorite Windows 11 features and how to use them — in the same way everything we wanted in Windows 11 but didn’t get and how set your default search engine.

Windows 10 vs Windows 11: all the big differences in the new operating system

Design and interface

microsoft-windows-11-announcements-June-24-2021-cnet-025.png

Windows 11 features a new design with a centered Start menu and taskbar.

Microsoft / Screenshot by Sarah Tew / CNET

Windows 11 brings a whole new Mac-like interface to the operating system. It features a clean design with rounded corners and pastel tones. The iconic start menu also moves to the center of the screen with the taskbar. But you can move them to the left, like in Windows 10, if you prefer.

Android application integration

windows-11-android-apps-amazon.png

You will be able to download Android apps to your PC running Windows 11.

Microsoft / Screenshot by Sarah Tew / CNET

Android apps will arrive on Windows 11 (but not right away) in Microsoft Store, via the Amazon Appstore. (There were several ways to access Android apps on Windows 10, including if you had a samsung galaxy phone, but that will make it native.) This is something Windows users have been waiting for for years, and marks another step towards the merger of mobile and portable devices.

Better support for virtual desktops

microsoft-windows-11-announcements-June-24-2021-cnet-007.png

You will find it easier to create and switch between different virtual desktops in Windows 11 compared to Windows 10.

Microsoft / Screenshot by Sarah Tew / CNET

Windows 11 will allow you to set up virtual desktops in a way more similar to Macs, switching between multiple desktops at once for personal, work, school, or gaming use. In Windows 10, it was more difficult to set up and use.

Easier transition from monitor to laptop

microsoft-windows-11-announcements-June-24-2021-cnet-009.png

It will be easier to group different sets of windows and applications and switch between desktop and monitor with Snap Layouts and Snap Groups.

Microsoft / Screenshot by Sarah Tew / CNET

The new operating system includes features called Snap groups and snap layouts – collections of applications that you are using at the same time which are in the taskbar and which can appear or be collapsed at the same time to make it easier to change the task. They also make it easier for you to plug and unplug a monitor, without losing the location of your open windows.

Microsoft Teams added to taskbar

microsoft-windows-11-announcements-June-24-2021-cnet-026.png

Microsoft Teams is integrated directly into the Windows 11 taskbar to facilitate video calls.

Microsoft / Screenshot by Sarah Tew / CNET

The teams are getting a new look and will be integrated directly into the Windows 11 taskbar, which will make it easier to access (and a little more like Apple’s FaceTime). You will be able to access teams from Windows, Mac, Android or iOS.

Widgets (well, sort of)

screenshot-2021-06-24-at-11-20-31-am.png

Launch widgets from the Windows 11 taskbar to view weather, news, actions, and more at a glance.

Microsoft / Screenshot by Josh Goldman / CNET

While they’ve been around for quite some time (remember desktop gadgets on Windows Vista?), Including in a Windows 10 recent update, you can now access widgets directly from the taskbar and customize them to see what you want.

Improved touchscreen, voice and stylus support

microsoft-windows-11-announcements-June-24-2021-cnet-064.png

Microsoft aims to make Windows 11 easier to use on tablets than Windows 10.

Microsoft / Screenshot by Sarah Tew / CNET

For tablets, Microsoft has sought to improve the touch experience, with more space between taskbar icons and adding gestures. Windows 11 also adds haptics to your digital pen, so you can hear and feel the vibrations as you use it to take notes or draw. Finally, the operating system introduces voice input and commands throughout the system.

Xbox technology to improve the game

microsoft-windows-11-announcements-June-24-2021-cnet-095.png

Windows 11 brings some technological additions to the Xbox for better gaming.

Microsoft / Screenshot by Sarah Tew / CNET

Windows 11 will get some features found in Xbox consoles, like Auto HDR and DirectStorage, to enhance gaming on your Windows PC. This marks a further step towards the integration of PCs and Xbox consoles for Microsoft.

Windows 11 brought welcome new features and a redesigned interface, but we didn’t get everything we wanted.

Microsoft

Windows 11 began its phased launch on October 5, bringing the operating system to newer devices before it was rolled out to older ones. (We can show you how to download windows 11 and how create a Windows 11 install drive.) Microsoft’s latest operating system boasts a redesigned interface, a Start button and taskbar centered and an overall aesthetic that is cleaner and closer to the Mac. (This is how the the new operating system compares to Windows 10.)

While Windows 11 will bring some new useful features, including easier virtual office creation, widgets, Android app downloads and a more integrated Microsoft team experience, it’s not quite a total overhaul of Windows 10. Several features that CNET’s editors including Jason Hiner, Stephen Shankland, Lori Grunin and I were hoping to see in terms of performance and productivity ultimately failed. Or at least they weren’t there at the first glance we got.

Here are some of the changes we would have liked to see in Windows 11, but we didn’t.

A vertical taskbar option

While you can move your taskbar in Windows 10 to an upright position on the left or right edge of the screen, the end result is often a bit messy in terms of UI. We were hoping this would still be an option in Windows 11, just cleaned up a bit. However, it looks like Microsoft has removed the feature and you will need to keep the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.

Digital videography for webcams

With many people switching to remote or hybrid work, the need for a solid webcam background is imperative for all of those Zoom and Teams calls. The iPhone 12 Pro and recent Google Pixel Phones already understand computer processing of images to improve the quality. We would have liked to see this feature in Windows 11 for webcams, which could also have given PCs an edge over the Mac M1, but no dice.

Faster Windows Updates

Windows 10 represented Microsoft’s decision to provide Windows as a service, with continuous updates, which is ideal for securing machines. However, these updates can be slow. In Windows 11, we would like to see a more similar approach to Google with Chrome OS, where the upgrade happens in a second partition so that it happens in the background. But it seems that the process of upgrade to Windows 11 once It’s available because you will be the same as for Windows 10.

Faster shutdown, restart and waking up

PCs running Windows 10 may experience slower shutdown, restart, and wakeup times, sometimes due to the need to close apps like Task Manager. We would have liked to see these options sped up in Windows 11, but Microsoft hasn’t mentioned any changes on that front.

Three-finger trackpad for drag and drop

MacOS offers the ability to use three fingers on the trackpad to drag and drop items. But Windows machines currently require you to double-click to do so. Again, Microsoft didn’t mention any changes here during its virtual event.

Easier options to reverse the direction of scrolling

MacOS makes it easy to reverse the scrolling direction of your mouse if you wish from System Preferences. But in Windows 10, you have to go to the Registry, and it’s a more complicated process.

Simplified user account creation

In Windows 10, you need to sign in to create a new user account, and Microsoft recommends that the new account also be associated with a Microsoft account. While we wanted to see easier user account creation without signing in or having to create or sign in a Microsoft account, Windows 11 Home goes in the opposite direction – you go. need to have a Microsoft account and internet connection to get the upgrade.

windows-laptop-how-to-tech-tip-cnet-2021-02-microsoft-surface-book-2-15-inch-laptop-windows

Most people will need both a Microsoft account and an internet connection to update to Windows 11.

Sarah Tew / CNET

Improved configuration of multiple cameras, webcams, microphones and headsets

With the rise of working from home, more and more people are upgrading their computer setup with multiple webcams, microphones and headsets. However, Windows 10 makes it difficult to choose which device you want to use and sometimes requires you to disable one of the others. While Windows 11 has added useful features for the hybrid workplace, including easier desktop creation, Microsoft executives have not discussed any changes in hardware configuration.

What other features would you like to see in Windows 11? Sound off in the comments below.

Windows, Gates and a firewall: Microsoft’s delicate castle in China.

Microsoft, which will shut down its professional social network LinkedIn in China, is one of the few American tech titans to have achieved some success in the country.

The software giant has maintained its business in China largely by complying with strict local laws, despite widespread censorship from the communist nation.

Here are some key points about the tech and games group’s operations in the world’s second-largest economy.

A pioneer

Microsoft arrived in China in 1992 and opened its largest research and development center outside of the United States. It employs around 6,200 people in China.

The Windows operating system is used in the vast majority of computers in China, although Beijing has promised in recent years to develop its own operating system. The company’s success has a downside, however, as its software is heavily pirated.

The large Chinese market, which is very restrictive for foreign companies, represents a drop in the ocean of Microsoft’s business, accounting for just 1.8% of its revenue, President Brad Smith said at the start of the report. last year.

Microsoft’s Bing is one of the few foreign search engines operating in China, although it lags far behind local competitors Baidu and Sogou, which dominate the market.

Bill Gates

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has long been a role model for many Chinese people, and his books are bestsellers in the country.

President Xi Jinping visited the company’s headquarters during a state visit to the United States in 2015, where he met Gates and his wife.

Microsoft is not leaving China entirely, as the company said its new strategy would focus “on helping China-based professionals find jobs in China and Chinese companies find quality candidates.”

Today, as head of his Bill & Melinda Gates humanitarian foundation, the 65-year-old has the prestige of a head of state in Beijing. In February 2020, Xi wrote a letter thanking Gates for his support during the coronavirus outbreak.

Censorship and control

China censors all matters deemed politically sensitive in the name of stability, and internet giants are urged to block unwanted content online.

Refusing to comply with the strict demands of Beijing, the American giants Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, as well as Wikipedia and several other foreign media, are blocked by the Chinese “great firewall”.

Things have not been smooth for the company, with Bing being temporarily taken offline in 2019 – suggesting the search engine may have been blocked by censorship.

Microsoft has operated its professional LinkedIn network in the country for years by complying with censorship rules through a local joint venture.

But on Thursday, he announced he would shut down LinkedIn in China, citing an “increasingly difficult operating environment and stricter compliance requirements.”

In March, the group previously announced it had halted new member registrations while reviewing compliance with local laws.

Can big stars really leave the brands they support …

LinkedIn has come under fire in the country for extracting professional accounts of dissidents – which it later said was a mistake – and for removing politically sensitive content from its pages.

Skype and Teams – Microsoft’s other two major platforms – remain available.

Video games

In 2000, Beijing halted the sale of all game consoles because of their alleged negative effects on the “mental health” of young users, although they remained available illegally.

After the ban was lifted, Microsoft was in 2014 the first foreign company to enter the video game market in China with its Xbox One console.

Also in 2014, the Chinese competition authorities opened an anti-monopoly investigation against Microsoft and its Windows software.

About 100 inspectors raided the group’s offices in four Chinese cities, confiscating files and questioning employees.
