Marvell Technology: Do you have any chemistry? Windows Server 2022 and Marvell QLogic Fiber Channel

0

Recently, Microsoft® announced the general availability of Windows® Server 2022, a version that American geeks refer to with its code name “Iron”. At Marvell we have been working for a long time to integrate our server connectivity solutions into Windows and like to think of the Marvell® QLogic® Fiber Channel (FC) technology like that little piece of “carbon” that turns “iron” into “steel” – strong but flexible and designed to make professional applications shine. Let’s dive into the bits and bytes of how the combination of Windows Server 2022 and Marvell QLogic FC creates great chemistry.

If you ask hybrid cloud IT managers and architects to identify the three elements they need most from their IT infrastructure, the answers will clearly focus on the following: improved security, scalability that doesn’t blow up bank and a simple way to deal with the toughest things. Based on feedback from our customers on the challenges they face in today’s demanding and evolving IT environments, Marvell has continued to improve its QLogic FC technology to meet these critical requirements. Marvell QLogic FC technology builds on new features in Microsoft Windows Server 2022 and further expands security, scalability and management capabilities to deliver server connectivity solutions designed specifically to meet the needs of our customers.

Better Security and Reliability: Security threats continue to evolve and increase, pushing CIOs to secure the server down to the firmware in the lower layers of the system platform, where attacks are most difficult to attack. detect. The advanced multi-layered security in Windows Server 2022 provides the comprehensive protection mission-critical servers need. Secure-core servers offered by OEMs make maximum use of hardware, firmware, and Windows capabilities to provide protection against current and future threats.

In Windows Server 2022, Marvell QLogic 2770 Series Enhanced 32GFC HBAs incorporate immutable hardware root of trust (RoT) and secure boot capabilities to prevent malicious firmware from hijacking the Fiber Channel HBA. The QLogic 2770 Series RoT provides both superior integrity and immunity during firmware updates by validating embedded firmware signatures with embedded hardware keys to ensure authenticity.

Marvell FC HBAs provide complete isolation at the port level in the FC controller architecture. This unique architecture provides an independent protocol management function and firmware image for each physical HBA port. Full port-level isolation prevents errors and security vulnerabilities from propagating to physical FC HBA ports, a critical feature for any containment strategy.

Scalability without surgery: Windows Server 2022 enables a flexible application platform for SQL Server and nested virtualization, with support for up to 48TB of memory and up to 64 sockets. SQL Server workloads that require higher throughput, IOPS, and latency are switching to Flash / NVMe. NVMe enables deep parallelism, faster random access, and better flash access over PCI Express® (PCIe®) to maximize bandwidth. NVMe performs best when coupled with a network that can provide lossless, low latency, and high performance transport. FC-NVMe extends these advantages over a Fiber Channel fabric. The Marvell QLogic 2770 Series enhanced 32GFC HBAs offer inbox support for FC-NVMe in Windows Server 2022, making it easy to access high-speed scalable storage for SQL Server applications.

On a large scale, SAN congestion, while rare, has the potential to spread rapidly and dramatically disrupt application performance, leading to loss of business and productivity. SANs today, especially those with hundreds of nodes and with flash storage, can be prone to congestion. Using standards-based fabric notification (FPIN), Marvell’s QLogic 2770 Series HBAs implement Universal SAN Congestion Mitigation (USCM) technology. USCM uniquely enables Brocade® and Cisco® SAN fabric to keep applications at peak performance by providing an in-band, contactless SAN congestion detection, notification and avoidance system.

Accessing low latency NVMe storage and maintaining congestion remotely means applications like SQL Server can scale without the pain of growth.

Easy Button Management: For most IT professionals, managing servers is a task that is performed on a regular basis on a daily basis. Basic services run on servers and without proper management things can quickly get complicated. In Windows, the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) was historically the central point of platform management. In Windows Server 2022, Windows Admin Center (WAC) is a new 100% web-based preferred server management tool. WAC provides a modern user interface that guarantees access to server management from any device at any time. The improved Marvell QLogic 2770 series 32GFC HBAs can be managed directly from inside the WAC by deploying the Marvell QLogic FC QConvergeConsole® extension, extending the familiar and robust interface to include management of Marvell QLogic FC HBAs.

And, it’s even better. Powered by StorFusionâ„¢, Marvell QLogic FC controllers can facilitate advanced management features and intelligent provisioning when deployed with supported Brocade and Cisco switches. By implementing these industry-leading solutions together, Windows Server 2022 Server and SAN administrators can take advantage of advanced diagnostics and software-defined provisioning that operates automatically to improve availability and accelerate deployment. This easy button management means you don’t even have to press a button.

In summary, with a hardware root of trust for security, an FC-NVMe inbox for SQL Server scaling, and HBA management built into WAC, Marvell QLogic FC HBAs can be considered the ‘carbon Which improves Windows Server 2022 and makes your applications shine like steel. It’s all about excellent chemistry.
