Users reported that their Microsoft Store is blocked and they received error message 0x800704ec. This specific error number indicates that the app on Windows 11 has been restricted in some way.

A possible cause of the problem is that your system administrator (in the case of computers that are part of a domain or multi-user machines) has blocked the application via group policy or the registry.

Or, on local computers, the issue may occur if an application is preventing the software from working properly. Again, security software or corrupt store cache files could be the cause of the problem.

Please read on for a list of suggested options you may want to consider.

Do I need Microsoft Store?

The Microsoft Store, which is still a core feature of the Windows 11 operating system, hasn’t changed. It is the method by which customers can purchase, download and install their favorite third-party software in a safe and secure manner.

But, more importantly, it is the method by which built-in system apps are updated to keep the operating system up to date with new features.

It’s a core component of the Windows-as-a-Service experience, which is why I’m surprised at the lackluster performance of the Microsoft Store as a standalone app.

There are a variety of concerns about the Microsoft Store, the biggest of which is the shortage of apps. This is compounded by the fact that not even Microsoft offers all of its programs through the store. Microsoft Teams, for example, is not included in this collection.

Neither Visual Studio Code nor Microsoft Office is an exception. This doesn’t give a good impression to other developers who plan to distribute their apps through the Microsoft Store.

If you are using an older version of Windows, this may be the cause of the problem, which can be fixed by updating the operating system. The bug will almost certainly be fixed in a future software release.

6. Disable Third-Party Antivirus Software

Another possible cause for the Microsoft Store crashing issue could be the use of third-party antivirus software. Third-party antivirus utilities should be disabled to prevent this from happening.

Antivirus utility icons are located in the system tray to the right of the Windows 10 taskbar, and users can right-click on them to access software context menu options that has been installed.

These pop-up menus usually have a disable setting of some type that users can choose to disable background anti-virus software.

What happens if I delete the Microsoft Store app?

First, Microsoft said that the ability to uninstall the Microsoft Store app is not supported.

Considering that a software uninstall mechanism was actually introduced in Windows 10, the phrase seems a bit strange.

Most likely Microsoft meant that uninstalling the Microsoft Store app is not recommended rather than not supported.

Then, according to Microsoft, there is no other option but to reset or reinstall the operating system in order to reinstall the application.

In other words, if you uninstall the Microsoft Store app from your device and later decide to recover it, the only option to recover it is to reinstall Windows 11 or reset your device.

The fact that the app has been removed may worry some users. however, a simple PowerShell script can be used to restore it.

To do this, first start PowerShell with administrator privileges from the Windows + X menu, then type or paste the following command and press Enter:
Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml”}
