System Center 2022 is now generally available

Data centers are the heart of any IT infrastructure for businesses that run mission-critical workloads. However, with components spanning compute, networking, and storage, as well as advances in cloud technologies, managing your data center environment can quickly become complex. Since its release in 2008, Microsoft System Center has been the solution that simplifies data center management across all your IT environments.

Today, we are excited to announce the general availability of System Center 2022, which includes System Center Operations Manager (SCOM), Virtual Machine Manager (VMM), System Center Orchestrator (SCORCH), Service Manager (SM), and Data Protection Manager (DPM).¹ With this release, we continue to bring new features for best-in-class data center management in various computing environments which may include Windows Server, Azure Stack HCI or VMWare deployments. We were thrilled to hear about organizations such as Olympia, Schaeffler, and Entain that validated the capabilities of System Center 2022 during preview. Now let’s dive into what’s new in System Center 2022.

Why upgrade to System Center 2022

Top notch data center management

Your computing environments are constantly evolving so that applications run on a diverse set of hardware. Your workforce is spread across multiple locations and remote management is the new normal. System Center 2022 aims to simplify collaboration and provide consistent control for all your environments.

Enhanced access control capabilities in SCOM simplify managing permissions to monitoring data and alert actions. An essential element towards the adoption of DevOps practices, giving users the right level of control. Integration with Microsoft Teams and alert closure management reduces circle time between app owners and SCOM admin. Developers can be notified of alerts for their apps on Teams channels.

Additionally, to meet the needs of growing environments, you can now assign both IPv4 and IPv6 IP addresses to software-defined networking (SDN) deployments with VMM. Data Protection Manager performance and technology optimizations mean you get more control and speed over backups and restores.

Overall, this release gives you more control over managing the environment and collaborating with DevOps teams.

Flexible infrastructure platform

Data centers are becoming increasingly heterogeneous, with multiple host and hypervisor platforms, Windows/Linux, VMware, and hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI). System Center 2022 unifies data center management practices, regardless of platform.

System Center 2022 is the best set of tools to manage your Windows Server 2022 and SQL Server infrastructure. This includes using Windows Server 2022 for management infrastructure and managing the Windows Server 2022-based environment. In addition to a comprehensive management experience for Windows Server 2022 workloads, this version of System Center adds support for managing Azure Stack HCI 21H2, VMware 7.0 hosts, and the latest Linux distributions. You can create, configure, and register 21H2 HCI clusters, control virtual machines on HCI clusters, configure SDN controllers, and manage storage pools from VMM. There are new management packs in SCOM to monitor Azure Stack HCI clusters. To protect VMs on Stack HCI clusters, Microsoft Azure Backup Server can now be used.

Hybrid management with Azure

Effectively managing IT resources dispersed across different locations without slowing down developer innovation is a major challenge facing IT managers today. Azure Arc lets you seamlessly govern, manage, and secure Windows and Linux servers, Kubernetes clusters, and applications on-premises, across multiple clouds, and at the edge from a single plane of control.

We will bring hybrid capabilities with System Center 2022 to standardize management and governance across on-premises and cloud environments while reusing your existing investments in System Center.

Stay tuned for more on these exciting features!
